Chapter Number 17(Jeff) Brief description of the plot:
After attacking Mr. Conner, Jurgis is sent to Jail as he awaits his trail. There he meets Jack Duane, his cellmate. Duane is educated, and Jurgis finds this to be of interest. Jurgis is sent to trial, and has an obvsiously unfair trial, due to several reasons. Because he has never been to a trial before, he doe snot know how to act, nor what to say. The fact that he is a foreigner went against his cause too. The judge was clearly on Mr. Conner's side, and ultimately sentences Jurgis to 30 days in jail. Jurgis asks the judge what his relatives are going to do without him being able to provide, and the judge ironically remarks that he should have thought about his family before he attacked Mr. Conner. On the 10th day in jail, he finally has a visitor, Stanislovas. Stanislovas tells him of how Ona is sick and how she cannot work because she cut her hand. All of Jurgis's family members and friends are blacklisted because he hurt Mr. Conner, and Mr. Conner holds a grudge against him. Characters in the Chapter:

Pg 163 - "He could not turn his face to the wall and sulk, he had to speak when he was spoken to; nor could he help being interested in the conversation of Duane-the first educated man with whom he had ever talked to." The irony of this passage is that the first educated man Jurgis ever spoke to, the most educated man he spoke to, ironically met Jurgis in jail.
Pg 165 - "They were the drainage of the great festering ulcer of society; they were hideous to look upon, sickening to talk to." It is interesting and contradictory that this is the description of those in jail, yet, Jurgis made friends with many in the jail.
